Storytelling has been a key component of brand messaging for Co’s Stephanie Danan and Justin Kern since they founded the label in 2011. Having collaborated on short film projects with the likes of artist Konstantin Kakanias and Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter, the duo has an affinity for creative types. They hail from the film world themselves. The Fitzpatrick-Leland House in Laurel Canyon, which they’ve leased as a sort of temporary store-cum-showoom, is particularly cinematic.
To spread the word about their new Essentials line, a reissuing of brand classics, the pair enlisted influential women—note, not influencers—to pose for evocative photos lensed by Amanda Demme. Among others, actress Marisa Tomei, director Ava DuVernay, and author Rachel Kushner were photographed over the course of several months in Los Angeles, where the brand is based. “These women that we’ve chosen have so much influence in the world, in design, health, and activism; they actually do things. We want to celebrate women who are actually having an impact in the world in a real authentic way,” Danan told Vogue
